Short answer Paste the prompt below into Claude with your own details and you get Plain-English answers about your cash, overdue invoices and profit straight from your Xero data, with questions to take to your accountant. Free or paid. Time saved: about 20 to 30 minutes each week digging through Xero reports (estimate).
Why it helps
Xero has all the answers, but you have to know which report to run and how to read it. Most owners just want to know: how much cash have I got, who owes me, and am I making money this month?
As of 23 October 2026, Claude's connector directory lists an official Xero connector, made by Xero Limited and marked "Anthropic verified". It has read-only access: Claude can look at your P&L, cash position, invoices, bills and bank transactions and answer questions about them, but it can't change anything in Xero. Claude's pricing page lists connectors on every plan, including Free. Features change fast, so check claude.com/connectors/xero before you start.
The prompt
Copy it, swap the bits in [square brackets], and paste it into ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini or Copilot.
I run a [type of business] in New Zealand and I've connected Xero. Using only my Xero data, answer these in plain NZ English: 1. What's my cash position today, and how does it compare with this time last month? 2. Which invoices are overdue? List customer, amount and days overdue, oldest first. 3. What were my income, expenses and profit for [period], compared with the same period last year? 4. What are the 3 biggest changes I should know about? Rules: - Use only what's in Xero. If something isn't there or you're not sure, say so. Don't guess. - Show amounts exactly as Xero has them. - Don't give tax advice or tell me what's claimable. Finish with 3 questions to ask my accountant.
Then keep chatting
Draft friendly reminders for the two oldest overdue invoices, using my amounts exactly.
Which expense categories went up the most this quarter?
What bills are due in the next 14 days, and will my current cash cover them?
Step by step
- In Claude, open the connector directory, find Xero (made by Xero Limited) and add it. Sign in with your Xero login when Xero asks. You never type your Xero password into a chat.
- Choose which Xero organisation Claude can see. Claude only sees what the account you connect can see.
- Paste the prompt and read the answers. Open the same report in Xero and check a couple of figures.
- Use the answers for decisions and conversations, not for filing. Your GST and tax returns still come from Xero and your accountant.
- If you stop using it, disconnect Xero in Claude's settings.
Worked example
Example details are made up. Your results will vary, so always read and check before you use them.
Watch out for
- Check the numbers. Claude reads Xero, but it can still misread a report or a date range. Compare key figures with the report in Xero before you act on them.
- It's read-only, which is good. It can't fix your books, so coding, reconciling and GST returns stay in Xero.
- Privacy: your Xero data includes customer and staff details. Only connect the organisation you need, check the connector's privacy policy, and follow your team's AI rules. See privacy.org.nz.
- Tax questions go to your accountant or ird.govt.nz, not the AI.
