Short answer Claude Code is Anthropic's tool for building software. You describe what you want in plain English and it writes the code, creates files and runs commands to make it work. As of 23 October 2026 it needs a paid plan (Pro or above). For a business owner it's good for small tools that run on your own computer, like a quoting calculator, a file tidy-up or a dashboard. Start in an empty folder, use copies of your data, approve each step, and get help before anything handles customer data or payments online.

What Claude Code is
Anthropic describes Claude Code as "an agentic coding tool that reads your codebase, edits files, runs commands, and integrates with your development tools". In plain English: you tell it what you want, and it builds it. It writes the files, runs them, reads the errors and fixes them, mostly on its own.
As of 23 October 2026 you can use it in four places: the terminal, a code editor like VS Code, the Claude desktop app (the Code tab), and in your browser at claude.ai/code. It's included with Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise. It isn't on the free plan.
If you're not sure where to start, the desktop app is the friendliest. No terminal needed.
Chat, Cowork or Code?
- Chat is for writing and thinking: emails, quotes, explaining things. Most of the use cases are chat.
- Cowork does a job for you in folders and tools you choose, then hands it back to check. Good for repeat admin. See hand off a weekly admin job to Cowork.
- Code builds things: a small app, a script, a website. Use it when you want a tool you'll keep using, not a one-off answer.
If a chat can do it, use chat. Claude Code is for when you want something that runs.
What a business owner can realistically build
Realistic in a day or two, with no coding background:
- A quoting calculator with your rates, margins and GST built in, that runs on your own computer
- A tool that renames, sorts or merges a folder of files, like supplier invoices or CSV exports
- A one-screen dashboard from your sales or jobs spreadsheet (the spreadsheet to dashboard use case does a lighter version in chat)
- A simple website for your business (start with the chat version in build a simple one-page website)
- Small checks you run each week, like "which jobs haven't been invoiced yet" from an export
Not realistic on your own, or not without someone checking it:
- Anything that takes payments
- Anything online that stores customer personal details or logins
- Replacing your accounting, booking or payroll software
- Anything your business would stop without
That isn't Claude Code's limit. It's about who carries the risk when it goes wrong. You do.
How I'd set it up safely
- Start in a new, empty folder. Make a folder just for this project and open Claude Code there. Don't start it in your home folder or anywhere with your business files.
- Use copies and made-up data. Give it a copy of the spreadsheet, never the original. Better still, start with made-up numbers until the tool works.
- Approve each step while you're learning. Claude Code has permission modes. In Manual mode it starts read-only and asks before it edits a file or runs a command, and you choose whether to allow it once or from then on. As of 23 October 2026, Anthropic's docs say Auto mode is the starting mode for terminal and VS Code sessions, where a separate model reviews actions and blocks ones it judges unsafe. While you're learning, I'd switch to Manual and read what it wants to do.
- Keep secrets out. Don't paste passwords, API keys, bank details or IRD numbers into it, and don't let it read files that contain them.
- Be careful with outside content. Anthropic warns about prompt injection: text in a web page or file written to trick the AI into doing something else. Don't point it at websites or files you don't trust, and review any command that downloads things.
Anthropic is clear that you're responsible for reviewing what it proposes before you approve it. Treat it like a keen new staff member with access to your computer.
Your first project, step by step
- Install the Claude desktop app, sign in with a paid plan and open the Code tab.
- Choose your new empty folder.
- Describe the tool in plain English. Who uses it, what goes in, what comes out, and what it must never do. For example: "A quoting calculator for my painting business. I type the room sizes and pick a paint. It shows materials, labour at $X an hour, margin and GST at 15%. It runs on my laptop. No internet, no customer details saved."
- Ask it to explain its plan before it builds anything. Say no to anything you don't understand and ask why.
- Let it build the first version, then test it with numbers you can check by hand.
- When something breaks, paste the error back and say what you expected. That's normal. Most of the work is this loop.
Write down what it built and how to run it, in a text file in the same folder.
When it breaks
It will. Errors look scary but they're mostly Claude Code's problem to read, not yours. Copy the message in and ask "what does this mean, in plain English, and what are you going to change?"
If it goes round in circles three times on the same problem, stop. Start a fresh session, describe the problem from scratch, or simplify what you're asking for.
When to get help
Get someone experienced to look at it before you:
- Put anything online that customers use
- Store or process personal information (the Privacy Act 2020 applies)
- Connect it to your bank, Xero, booking system or email with write access
- Let it run on a schedule without you watching
- Rely on it for anything you'd lose sleep over if it stopped
That's what a 1:1 session is for. We can build the first version together, or check what you've built. If you'd rather learn on your own, Anthropic runs free self-paced courses at Claude Academy, including Claude Code 101.
Questions people ask
Do I need to know how to code to use Claude Code?
No. You describe what you want in plain English and it writes the code. It helps to be patient, methodical and willing to test things properly. You'll pick up the basics of reading errors as you go.
Is Claude Code free?
No. As of 23 October 2026 it's included with Pro (US$20 a month, or US$17 a month billed yearly), Max, Team and Enterprise, but not the free plan. Check Anthropic's pricing page for the current details, and the AI tool prices in NZ use case for GST.
Can Claude Code break my computer or delete my files?
It can change and delete files and run commands, so it's possible. That's why I start in an empty folder, use copies of data and approve each step in Manual mode. Anthropic's docs say you're responsible for reviewing commands before you approve them.
What's the difference between Claude Code and Cowork?
Cowork does tasks for you, like summaries, file tidy-ups and drafting, in folders and tools you choose. Claude Code builds software. If you want a job done, try Cowork. If you want a tool you'll keep using, try Claude Code.
Can Claude Code build my business a website?
Yes, a simple one. Putting it live, the domain, and anything that takes bookings or payments needs more care. Start with build a simple one-page website in chat, then move to Claude Code if you want more.
